Sage
Sage is one of the most commonly used plants in cooking, as evidenced by its frequent presence in vegetable patches and gardens. As well as being used in roasts, roulades, stuffed dishes and sauces, its pleasant, slightly spicy and bitter aroma is enough to transform melted butter into a tasty condiment for pasta and rice. It was once believed to have aphrodisiac properties.
A hardy, perennial plant that thrives in full sun. It struggles to survive in areas with long, cold winters. It prefers neutral or slightly calcareous, sandy soils. Water sparingly and take care to avoid waterlogging, which is the main cause of the plant’s death.
